Obituary of George Barker
George Barker, 88, of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, passed away on January 16, 2023, following a short illness.
George was born on September 26, 1934, and was raised in Florida until he moved back to NJ with his family in 1952. He was a graduate of Red Bank Regional High School and Rutgers University.
George is survived by his wife, Grace (Dusty),Durstewitz of 63 years, and their three daughters. Barbara Glendinning and her husband, Tim, of Boxford, MA; Laura Dugan and her husband, Buddy, of Middletown, NJ; and Joyce Abrahamsen and her husband, Warren, of Middletown, NJ. George is also survived by five grandchildren, Joe, Tricia, Warren, Corinne, and Katherine. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Timothy Christian.
George is a veteran of the Korean War, where he earned several medals. He spent four years as an active member of the Marine Corps until 1957, when he returned to the United States. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest.
George worked as a truck driver and supervisor for over 40 years in the trucking industry. He was a hard worker and dedicated family man, always doing whatever was needed to provide, and he loved spending time with his wife and family. George was an avid automobile and motorcycle enthusiast, working on cars and any machine he could get his hands on, and he especially enjoyed taking trips on his Harley Davidson.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 20, from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at Posten-McGinley Funeral Home in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. A funeral service will also be held at Posten-McGinley at 11:30 am this Saturday, January 21.
