Robert A. Schoeffling Obituary

Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Community Leader

Robert A. Schoeffling, lovingly known as “Mayor Bob,” was born in Port Monmouth, New Jersey, on October 6, 1935. He made Atlantic Highlands his home for his entire adult life, a testament to his deep love for the community that meant so much to him.

Mayor Bob served Atlantic Highlands with dedication as mayor from 1988 to 2000, following many years on the borough council. During his three terms, his leadership helped guide the town through significant growth and positive change. His efforts brought the Seastreak high-speed ferry service to New York City and supported the revitalization of the downtown district. Affectionately called “The Marrying Mayor,” Bob officiated more than 400 weddings during his time in office.

Bob’s shining accomplishment was the funding and construction of Portland Pointe, an affordable senior housing community. In recognition of his lasting impact, the town named a street in his honor: Schoeffling Way.

Before entering public service, Bob spent nearly 40 years with FirstEnergy (formerly Jersey Central Power & Light). He began his career as a meter reader, walking neighborhoods throughout Monmouth County, and built a professional life marked by hard work, humility, and dedication.

A rare book collector and dealer, Bob helped establish the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, was its first president, and played an important role in securing its historic home on East Mount Avenue. Portions of his collection remain on display at both the Atlantic Highlands and Middletown Historical Societies, preserving local history for future generations.

Bob was an avid baseball fan who loved to root against the Yankees, much to the frustration of family members who cheered for them with pride. He had a dry sense of humor that was often undetectable to anyone who did not know him well, and he especially enjoyed teasing his family about their loyalty to the team.

In his later years, Bob was a familiar and beloved presence throughout town. He enjoyed walking the streets of Atlantic Highlands, talking with friends and neighbors, and spending time at The Atlantic Diner while proudly wearing his “Mayor Bob” ballcap. He also worked the register at the Renaissance Emporium, where he maintained a stall featuring rare books and collectibles.

Bob is survived by his children and their spouses: Karen (Ken), Rob (Patty), Laura (Gordon), and Andy (Rachel); ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He carries forward the memory of his beloved wife, Ruth, whose love and influence remain an enduring part of the family’s life.

Mayor Bob’s legacy is deeply rooted in Atlantic Highlands. He helped shape the town he loved, enriched its history, and served its people with dedication and heart. His loss leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will continue to be felt throughout Monmouth County for generations to come.
