Born and raised in Jersey City, Patrick was the son of the late Patrick J. and Dorothy Kearns. He
attended Hudson Catholic High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy
during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Butte. During his service, he received the National
Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. It was also during his time in the Navy
that Patrick trained as an electrician — a skill that would shape his lifelong career.
Patrick spent the majority of his professional life with the Port Authority of NY & NJ in the
railroad division, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
He made his home in Union Beach, NJ, and is survived by his children: Patrick, Matthew
(Ashley), and Caitlin Kearns (Vincent Heckelman.) He was predeceased by his beloved son
Christopher. Patrick also leaves behind his siblings Mary Kane (Robert), Chris (Maura), Gerard
(Laurie), Noreen Laplaski (Ed), James (Karen), and Neil (Kelly), along with many cherished
nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Erin.
In retirement, Patrick found great joy and fellowship as an active member of VFW Post 6902 in
Highlands, where he held several positions and devoted his time to supporting fellow veterans.
His family is deeply grateful to the VFW community for their support and friendship.
Patrick also took great pride in volunteering at the Twin Lights Historical Society Lighthouse,
where he shared his passion for local history and preservation.
In keeping with Patrick’s wishes, burial arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, the
family kindly asks that donations be made in his memory to VFW Post 6902 in Highlands, NJ.
