Elizabeth Louise Connell, affectionately known to many as Betty Lou, passed away peacefully on August 22, at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and joy that will echo through generations. Born on January 6, 1931 in Fair Haven, New Jersey, and a lifelong resident of Atlantic Highlands, Betty Lou lived with grace, strength, and a spirit that touched everyone around her.
Betty Lou was a graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School. She graced the runways of New York City as a fashion model, her elegance and poise captivating all who saw her. Yet her most cherished role was that of a mother, raising her five children in the heart of Atlantic Highlands, where she created a home filled with music, laughter, and unforgettable memories. She had a flair for style and always had the perfect outfit for every holiday or occasion. Her wardrobe was as vibrant and joyful as she was.
Despite enduring the unimaginable heartbreak of losing her three beloved sons, John, Walter, and Billy, Betty Lou never let sorrow dim her light. She continued to create magic in the everyday, offering warmth and comfort to all who crossed her path.
Betty Lou enjoyed playing the piano, filling rooms with melodies that became the soundtrack of her family’s life. Professionally, she served as an administrative assistant and later found her true calling in early childhood education. Affectionately called “Miss Betty,” she shaped countless young lives with compassion, creativity, and a sparkle in her eye that made learning feel like an adventure.
Betty Lou had a rare gift. She made you feel deeply loved, seen, and cherished. Her spunky spirit and love for shenanigans brought joy wherever she went. Though she lived for 94 remarkable years, it was never enough time for those who adored her.
She was the only child of John and Betty Matthews, and is predeceased by her cherished sons John, Walter, and Billy. She is survived by her loving daughters Donna Soleau (and husband Bob) and Maureen Akerlund (and husband Neal), as well as her grandchildren Matthew and Michael Soleau, John Patrick Connell and Ian Akerlund, in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her life was a testament to grace, resilience, and unconditional love. She will be missed beyond measure and remembered with reverence, laughter, and boundless affection.
