Brian Newman Obituary

Brian Newman, age 86, of Atlantic Highlands, NJ, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family in his last hours, as he left this earth to joyfully be with the Lord.

Brian was born on June 27, 1938, in Wolverhampton, England, to Cyril and Winifred Newman. He grew up in Wiltshire, England, and as a child, Brian had a tremendous curiosity and a hunger to learn. He took his talents to Bristol University, where he received a Ph.D. in physics. At Bristol, he met the love of his life, Cherry, whom he married on August 8, 1964. Cherry was the center of Brian’s life, and the love he had for her was apparent and an example to all. They were married for 60 cherished years. They had their first child, Angela, in Bristol, England, in May of 1965 and that December, they left for the United States, when Brian accepted a job at the College of Engineering at Rutgers University. Brian taught there for 35 years and became a distinguished professor. He was a prolific researcher with many patents and publications, but he always had a love for teaching and was a dedicated professor to his students in the College of Engineering. For 36 years, Brian and Cherry lived in Highland Park, NJ, where they raised their five children.

Brian had a loving smile and wonderful laugh. He was an accomplished chess player. An avid reader, particularly of history, he loved to learn and was a sponge for information. Brian was a book collector, always searching for those first-edition books. He loved to watch soccer and all sports. During the summer, Brian enjoyed camping with his family, especially in Maine. He loved to hike and picnic with his family and spend time together talking about any and all topics. He always gave great advice and was a great listener. Brian was a highly respected scientist, a wonderfully loving father, grandad, brother, uncle and friend. After his faith, his family was the priority of his life, and he cherished the time he spent with his 10 grandchildren.

A devout Catholic, Brian was a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Brian will be missed by all. We will always have his love, his laugh, his smile, his example, his advice, and many great memories. The remembrance of his beautiful and gentle spirit will forever be with us.

He is survived by his daughter, Angela Stephens, son-in-law James, and children, Brian, Elizabeth and Riley; his, son, David Newman, daughter-in-law Claudia, and their children, Charley and Luke; his son, Edward Newman, daughter-in-law Mary, and their children, Cecilia and Matthew; his daughter, Julia Quindlen, son-in-law Michael; and his daughter Mary Vidal, son-in-law Doug, and their children, Justin, Corina, and Naomi. Brian is also survived by his loving brother, John Newman, and his wife Liz, and his loving sister, Sylvia Hendricks, and her husband Neil. Brian adored his siblings, who reside in England, as well as his nieces, Tina, Carol and Sarah, and his nephew Robert.
